The Amalgam Blues

Many dentists and scientists take the more serious approach when warning people about the dangers of the mercury element used in amalgam fillings. With so much information surrounding ‘silver’ mercury fillings and the many studies available, it’s impossible to relay all of the data that’s now available in only one blog post.

Using an entertaining approach to peak curiosity for serious matters helps to reach others who shy away from health talks or younger generations who don’t yet have the attention span to read through entire reports.

Because of this, there are some individuals who feel it’s important to also add entertainment to help increase awareness like this youthful, looking dentist, featured in the video below.

By mixing up the daily and sometimes upsetting reports with a jazzy musical number, a different light helps to bring awareness to the risks associated with dental amalgams – enjoy!

Songs are known for helping to retain factual information and with this catchy tune, you might even find yourself singing along!

Katherine Heigl: Invisalign Testimonial

In Hollywood, a world where beauty matters a heck of a lot, many celebrities take the time to perfect flaws they feel uncomfortable with. These superstars set a standard of ideal attractiveness for the rest of the world but that doesn’t mean they were born completely flawless!

Previously, we broke down Tom Cruise’s smile and found that it wasn’t quite as perfect as most people originally believe it to be. This time around, we’ll switch genders and focus on a famous set of chompers dentists love talking about that now sits gorgeously aligned in Katherine Heigl’s mouth.

While Katherine wasn’t born with extremely horrendous teeth, there were enough problems to make her feel insecure for much of her life. After she became engaged, Katherine decided that she was going to have that perfect smile for her big wedding day.

Being an actress in box office movies as well as having been a main character on the hit television show, Grey’s Anatomy, means that walking around with silver braces is not a possibility for her to consider.

Because of this, Katherine chose to opt for the clear and discreet Invisalign aligners. When she first started wearing them in 2007, Heigl couldn’t stop talking about the wonders of Invisalign and what it was doing for her.

Like many adults who would, understandably, feel incredibly self-conscious walking around with prominent braces, Katherine wanted to fix her teeth with the least amount of attention pointing out her biggest insecurity.

Luckily for us, Katherine is known for being outspoken and isn’t shy when talking about her ‘wonky tooth’ and proudly showing off her Invisalign set:

Katherine Heigl Invisalign Video

Katherine Heigl Before InvisalignIf you’ve noticed, right in the middle of her interview, she pulls out her Invisalign trays for everyone to see! It’s a little difficult to see her teeth clearly in that clip so here is a ‘Before’ photograph. See if you can spot what’s wrong with her teeth: The most visible aspect is her two lateral incisor teeth slightly protrude outward farther than her front teeth. While this isn’t as apparent from the front view, it’s quite obvious when looking from this angle:Katherine Heigl Before Invisalign At An Angle

Many people notice crooked teeth and perceive it as only a cosmetic flaw when realistically, there are many other problems associated with it. When there is misalignment of teeth, as shown in Katherine’s incisors, it means that the upper and lower jaws are not aligned. It can also affect the function of the jaw which can lead to sore muscles and headaches.

This specific dental problem is extremely common due to the fact that more often than not, it’s hereditarily passed on from parent to child.

Invisalign isn’t suitable for people with weak roots or those who require more extensive dental work. Since Katherine Heigl’s protruding teeth are such a common occurrence, she was the perfect candidate for Invisalign after her visit to the dentist or orthodontist.

Although Katherine has always been a natural beauty, teeth and all, take a look at what a difference Invisalign has made for her:

Not only did Invisalign give her straighter teeth – it gives her entire face a brighter, more dazzling appearance because of her improved self-confidence.

Mouthwash Fears

You might have heard about the unfortunate death of a lady who was allergic to mouthwash.

I wanted to make sure you got to see the segment to realise it’s a VERY RARE occurrence – the first of its kind reported in Australia.

Amalgam Fillings: A Brief History

Discovered over a century and a half ago, amalgam fillings were once popularly used for filling cavities. With limited research and resources, there weren’t many options that didn’t require excruciatingly amounts of pain available; however, it didn’t take very long for the original Amalgam Wars to begin in the late 1800’s.

Putting aside data spreadsheets and machines that didn’t yet exist, very evident signs of mercury toxicity appeared in mouths that blistered, gum lines that bled and even disorientation. Obviously, this led to many disagreements with one side stating that the process involved minimal pain with long-lasting durability and the other refuting this claim, stating that the side effects of mercury were too harmful to the human system, having negative, long-lasting side effects.

The progression in the use of ‘silver’ amalgams has always maintained the debate of ‘Is it or isn’t it’ harmful to people up until this very day! What has changed, though, are the new medicines used in dental offices to numb pain and more importantly, the new uses of different elements combined to create composite fillings and fillings made with porcelain or glass.

While the world is shifting towards the removal of amalgam fillings (not to mention the decline of initial amalgam placements), there are still a vast number of people who already have multiple dental amalgams or are receiving them for the very first time.

By continuing to raise awareness on the dangers of mercury, the numbers of amalgam fillings will continue to decline allowing the number of healthy persons to continually increase.

Watch the video to learn the story behind amalgam fillings… I warn you it’s shocking!

Amalgam Fillings: The Controversy Continues

Amalgam fillings are extremely controversial with many dentists, supported by dental associations, proclaiming that its component of mercury isn’t harmful to the human body. While scientific research is showing massive results of mercury poisoning, sometimes words still aren’t enough to make people understand the degree of dangers that lay with amalgam fillings.

The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) decided that the next obvious step in raising awareness was to not just write about their scientific findings but to show everyone the cold, hard truth of the hazardous waste sitting in millions of people’s mouths.

Gaining notoriety, this video sent many patients with dental amalgams on the mission of having them removed and replaced with safer composite fillings:

After this video came out, the ‘seeing is believing’ approach caused a stir for dentists and associations dedicated to amalgam fillings.

Many pro-amalgam dentists and dental associations claimed that the video was a fake or a conspiracy while others argued that special effects were used to produce these vivid results.

Dr. Layton, an amalgam free dentist, came back stronger with a new video refuting any doubts of special effects by using the Jerome Mercury Vaporizer, the only instrument available to detect on-site mercury vapours:

After watching these videos, it’s impossible not to feel alarmed over the risks of amalgam fillings!

Snap On Smile On Today Tonight

If you missed the Snap On Smile Sydney episode on Today Tonight that showed how to get perfect teeth, here it is below. We’ve blogged about Snap On Smile previously, but this television segment explains everything you need to know to get that Hollywood Smile you’ve always wanted.

Snap On Smile Sydney On Today Tonight – Get Your Hollywood Smile!

SNAP ON SMILE – SYDNEY ON TODAY TONIGHT – TRANSCRIPT

And of course the best accessory to a dazzling outfit is a flashy smile to suit.  And these days a quality smile has never been easier to get.

David Richardson reports on the new treatments that allow you to get those pearly whites at home.

No drilling, no pain and you can have the smile that you’ve always dreamed of; quick, easy and no pain.

It sounds too good to be true; a painless dental visit.  But now you can get a celebrity smile thanks to a revolutionary new treatment that is changing lives.

Normally people don’t actually have the teeth that they want, and they’re very embarrassed with their smile.  So they train themselves not to smile with their teeth.  It’s very common and it’s something we’d like to change.

Before I didn’t even show my teeth, I didn’t really smile like this in photos.  But now I can show my teeth and it’s made a huge difference in my life.

Lisa is one of the first in the country to undergo this 21st century dental innovation.  It’s called on Snap-On smile.

It’s a 2 appointment process.  We take a mold at the first appointment, we send that away; a month later you come back and you get your Snap-On smile.  It’s really as easy as that.

Using the Snap-On smile to fix any number of problems from missing teeth to covering unsightly gaps, or worse.

We had this lady who through many years of neglect had a lot of fillings, a lot of dental work, she was unhappy with her smile…

Not surprising really; that’s not good.

Yeah, discoloured teeth, missing teeth; and with a Snap-On smile for the top and bottom jaw we gave her a very beautiful smile in 2 appointments.

Wow!

The Snap-On smile is made from a tough new resin devised in the United States.  It doesn’t fade or discolour, and the teeth are shatterproof.  In 3 weeks Lisa had a new Hollywood smile.

What do you think?

Oh, that’s wonderful.

What we’ve done is we’ve extended the teeth by about 3 mm and brought out the lip a little bit more.  It sounds like a lot, but it looks obviously really, really nice.

A Snap-On smile will start at $2200.  This is a fraction of the cost of getting porcelain veneers, or porcelain crowns.

What effect have you seen this treatment have on some of your patients?

Not only do we change their teeth, but we also change their self-esteem; they become a lot more confident and happier.

Even people with pretty good teeth, like Helen, are keen for a new look.

So what don’t you like about that?  It doesn’t seem a lot wrong with it.

Yeah, there just showing too much gum when I smile; so I’m not exactly happy with that.

And in 3 weeks Helen will have a new set of Snap-On teeth.

The Snap-On smile is going to be revolutionary because it’s removable, it’s quick to put on and it’s very comfortable for the patients to wear.

Is it true you can actually have your Snap-On teeth shaped to match your favorite Hollywood actor or actress?

You can decide what kind of smile you like, whether they’re the Julia Robert’s type wide smile, and you can choose the shape and the size of the teeth, plus the colour as well.   So you know the possibilities are really almost limitless.

If Zoom revolutionized tooth whitening in the dental surgery, now the same effects can be had at home; a whitening kit like no other.

In the past the home kits that were available the patient would have to wear like a bleaching tray for about 10 to 14 nights for about 2 to 4 hours a night, and sometimes overnight.

You can make a special mouth guard for the at-home kit in less than 30 minutes.  The rest is done in the comfort of your home.

Two applications a day of 15 minutes each for 7 days.  It’s a lot stronger than the other home kits that were available so it currently is [unwear]; it currently is on the market at 38% carbamide peroxide.

How many shades lighter can you get?

You can get up to about 14 shades depending on their original colour of their teeth.

These 2 latest cosmetic innovations are now within reach of more and more everyday Australians.  And with a new Zoom 4 whitening system on the way to our shores later this year it’s set to cut treatment time down to less than a lunch break.  Whatever the system the patients couldn’t be happier.

It’s sort of like when you just wear a watch, you’re not really used to it, but afterwards like now I don’t really think about it, it’s so sort of comfortable and natural, and yeah I wouldn’t leave home without it.
